Digestibility of western Canadian finishing beef cattle diets when short-season, high-moisture shelled corn and snaplage partially replace dry-rolled barley grain and barley silage

The objective of this study was to determine the effects substituting barley grain with short-season, high-moisture shelled corn, and silage snaplage on ruminal fermentation site extent digestion in beef cattle fed finishing diets. Six ruminally duodenally cannulated heifers (420 ± 16.4 kg body weight) were a diet (BG), where half replaced corn (HC), or portion (SN) replicated 3 × Latin square design. While dry matter starch intake unaffected, feeding SN resulted greater ( P = 0.02) but not total tract digestibility than BG. Ruminal pH did differ between HC BG, reduced minimum relative Feeding BG increased 0.04) ammonia concentrations over HC. In conclusion, can partially replace minimal impact nutrient fermentation, replacement some may increase risk acidosis.
